Dry drowning is a real danger that most pet owners are not familiar with.
Dry drowning occurs when the dog aspirates (or inhales) water while swimming (or in near drowning events) causing irritation to the lungs which can cause pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and death.
The scary thing about dry drowning is it can happen hours or even days after the water fun (or near drowning accident).
Symptoms of dry drowning include:
- Vomiting
- Slow and dazed movements
- Difficulty breathing
- Irregular heartbeat
- Skin and gums may change colour
- Drooling
- Coughing
What can you do to prevent dry drowning?
- Ensure your dog knows how to swim or use a pet life jacket
- Ensure your dog knows how to exit the water (ie. where the stairs to exit the pool are)
- Make them take a break
- Do not encourage your dog to dive for objects
If you are concerned that your dog is exhibiting symptoms of dry drowning or has suffered from a near drowning incident please contact your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency clinic immediately.
