Ticks & Lyme Disease

Ticks are arachnids meaning they are relatives of spiders, mites and scorpions. Ticks crawl – they don’t jump, fly or drop from trees. They prefer to live in wooded areas, in tall grass and under leaf litter.

These pesky pests hide under the snow, and come out to look for a host when temperatures reach 4 degrees Celsius or above. They survive by biting humans and animals and feeding on their blood.

Ontario is continuing to experience an increase in the prevalence of the Deer tick (also known as the Black Legged tick). This is of great concern because Deer Tick bites can transmit Lyme Disease to both pets and humans.

The good news is that there is a safe oral medication to help protect your dog from ticks and the diseases they carry.

Please contact the clinic to discuss tick prevention options for your furry four legged family member!
